Baltimore Elite Giants of 1942

During the nine-year skein of pennants by the Homestead Grays, Tom Wilson’s Elite Giants often pushed them to the wire. The two teams were neck-and-neck in the 1942 pennant stretch, headed for a blanket finish, when Roy Campanella and Sammy T. Hughes left the team to showcase for the major leagues in an exhibition game and were given a suspension. The Elites still finished a close second. Spitball ace Bill Byrd and lefthander Jonas Gaines kept the Elites in the race all year, with support from the bats of George Scales and an outfield of hard-hitters, Wild Bill Wright, Henry Kimbro and Bill Hoskins.
